Confession is the true form of faith

According to Thomas, confession is the external act that corresponds to the inner disposition of faith.

“exterior enim locutio ordinatur ad significandum id quod in corde concipitur. Unde sicut conceptus interior eorum quae sunt fidei est proprie fidei actus, ita etiam et exterior confessio” (IIa IIae, 3, 1, resp.).

Speech, for Thomas, has an ordained purpose: it is a gift from God, always to be used as such.
